Kerala No.1, Tamil Nadu No.2 – South retains top in NITI Aayog Report.

The NITI Aayog in consultation with the UN has jointly released the rankings measure states’ performance on the 16 global sustainable development goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of India Index for 2020-21 to track the progress of all States and Union Territories in India.

The rankings are calculated by evaluating the progress of states and union territories in education, health, gender, economic growth, climate change, institutions and the environment. The report is said to clearly outline the comprehensive goals and international priorities of the 2030 Plan.

Kerala tops the list for the 2020-21 Finance Commission rankings with 16 points overall, followed by Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh with 74 points each, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka and Uttarakhand with 72 points. Bihar, Assam and Jharkhand have the lowest scores. Whereas Bihar is in last place with 52 points.

In the Poverty Alleviation category, Tamil Nadu tops the list with 86 points. States including Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar have the lowest points in poverty alleviation. Bihar is last in that category with 32 points.

Points scored by Tamil Nadu in each category in 2020-21:

At the state level, Tamil Nadu has 86 points (first place) on poverty alleviation, 66 points on hunger (7th place), health and well-being 81 points (3rd place), quality education 69 points (5th place) and gender equality 59 points (4th). 1st place), clean drinking water with 87 points (9th place), employment and economic growth with 71 points (4th place).

The 2020-21 list shows that India’s overall SDG score is up by 6 points. The number of points has risen from 60 to 66 from 2019 to 2020.
