BJP’s never-ending lie: 9 years and 10.76 lakh crores of funds to Tamil Nadu? Read more to know the truth

Earlier, Nirmala Sitharaman said that during the period 2014–2023, the central government received Rs 6.23 lakh crore as tax from Tamil Nadu, and in addition to the tax received, they have given Rs 6.69 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu. This video was made viral by the BJP. Since it was not the truth, we published an article saying that indirect tax, GST tax, etc. were not mentioned.

Subsequently, BJP Tamil Nadu State President Annamalai cited a report from August of last year stating that Tamil Nadu has received over Rs. 10,76,000 crore in the last nine years since Narendra Modi became India’s prime minister in 2014. The report contains numerous inaccuracies and false information. They are covered in this article.

Report: English | Tamil

Metro Rail:

The report claimed that the cost of setting up the Chennai Metro Rail project is Rs. 72,868.71 crore.

The initial phase of the Chennai Metro Rail was carried out during the previous Congress regime. In the information released by PIB regarding the metro works in 2022, it is stated that Rs. 9,622.31 crore for the first phase of the Chennai Metro has been provided on behalf of the Union Government from January 2014 until now.

The second phase of metro works is currently underway for Rs 63,246 crore. It has been decided that the Union and State Governments will contribute 50-50 percent to this project. These two amounts are added together and mentioned in total.

However, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu said that the Union Government has so far (Jan. 2024) provided only Rs 3,273 crore for the second phase of the project, according to ‘BBC Tamil’.

This clearly states that the BJP has told a lie in its statement that the Union Government has given an amount that it did not provide for the Chennai Metro project.

Mudra Loan Assistance Scheme (PMMY):

In its report, the BJP has mentioned that more than 4 crore people (4,08,49,942 people) have benefited in Tamil Nadu through the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana scheme, and the amount given to them is Rs 2,02,603.94 crore.

In this case, DMK member K.R.N Rajeshkumar has questioned how many people have benefited from Mudra loan assistance in the last 5 years.

3,15,37,719 people in Tamil Nadu have benefited from the MUDRA scheme in the 5 years from FY 2018-19 to FY 2022-23. The Union Finance Ministry has replied that the total amount given to them is Rs 1,74,660 crore.

This loan assistance scheme was launched in April 2015. Based on this information, there is a possibility that around 4 crore people have benefited, as per the BJP report. However, this is a loan that can be taken by the general public from the banks is to be repaid to the bank by the borrower. The BJP has advertised this loan assistance scheme as financial aid to Tamil Nadu.

Madurai AIIMS :

The total cost of Madurai AIIMS hospital is Rs 1,978 crore, according to the BJP’s report. In February 2015, the Union Government announced the establishment of AIIMS Hospital in Madurai. Four years later, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone in January 2019.

The construction of the AIIMS Madurai Hospital has not started even after the foundation stone was laid five years ago. Colleges that haven’t opened yet are still accepting applications from the students. These pupils remain at Ramanathapuram Medical College and pursue their studies there.

Apart from this, the Union Government has decided to allocate 1977.8 crore rupees for the construction of AIIMS Madurai as of December 2023. However, only Rs 18.37 crore has been disbursed so far. Here, the BJP said in its statement, which is again a lie, that it had distributed the funds that were still outstanding.

PMSVANidhi :

A BJP statement said that 1,80,027 people have benefited from the PMSVANidhi scheme in Tamil Nadu during the years 2020-23. It is a loan assistance scheme for roadside small traders. Merchants have to pay back the amount they get through this scheme. This too has been shown as funded by the Union Government.

Next, it is mentioned that 15,54,249 people have benefited through the Atmanirbhar Bharat Scheme.

The Union Ministry of Labor and Employment has informed the Rajya Sabha on how many people have benefited from this scheme till July 22, 2023.

As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, 16,739 companies and 8,17,340 employees have benefited. There is a huge difference between the Union government’s figure and the figure in the BJP’s report.

MSME – Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises:

BJP report says 26,659 crore is the amount allocated to Tamil Nadu for small and micro industries. This is also the loan amount. This too has to be repaid by the receivers. It is not financial aid.

The Tamil report says the amount as a fund, which is untrue, and the English report states it as ‘Loan Amount’.

Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY):

Zero balance bank accounts have been started for 49 crore people across India through Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana. It has been mentioned that out of Rs 1.97 lakh crore, Rs 4,896.73 crore balance is maintained by 1.4 crore bank accounts opened in Tamil Nadu.

In August 2014, Modi launched the Jan-Dhan Yojana scheme to start a bank account with zero balance when he became Prime Minister. A question on the number of inactive accounts out of the bank accounts opened under the scheme was raised in Parliament last December.

In response, the finance ministry said that out of 51.11 crore accounts opened under the PMJDY scheme, 20 percent of the accounts are inoperative.

The BJP in its report, also included Rs 4,896.73 crore as a part of the amount credited to Tamil Nadu. Is that amount a subsidy paid into the bank accounts of the common people by the Union Government? Debt? Nor does it mention any details about whether it is the public’s own money.

According to the BJP report, 10.76 lakh crores of funds have been provided to Tamil Nadu including non-distributed funds, bank balances, and loan schemes.
