Electoral Bonds: Top 5 donors and their run-ins with law enforcement agencies and projects bagged by them

The Supreme Court instructed SBI Bank to submit all information about election bonds by March 21. Earlier, the Constitution Bench, led by Chief Justice D. Y. ChandraChud, ordered SBI to share election-related details by March 15. But on March 14, Election Commission of India shared SBI’s list on its website, leaving details that links the buyer to the political party. So, on March 17, the Election Commission released another statement asking for more information. SBI didn’t provide all the needed details, prompting the Supreme Court to criticise their approach. Specifically, the Court demanded SBI to disclose the purchase date, buyer’s name, and bond ID for each bond by March 21. Following this, the Election Commission published the complete details given by SBI on its website.

The biggest donor is a Coimbatore lottery tycoon Santigo Martin’s Future Gaming Future gaming and Hotel services Pvt Ltd.

Future gaming and Hotel Services Pvt Ltd 

Future Gaming and Hotel Services, a Coimbatore-based company, is the largest donor to political parties. Future Gaming and Hotel Services was founded in 1991 by Santiago Martin and he is the company’s chairman. 

Mr. Martin’s life story is a fascinating tale of rags to riches, from a daily wage labourer to the head of a lottery empire spanning multiple Indian states and neighbouring countries.  

The data reveals that Future Gaming donated 1368 crores between April 2019 and January 2024. 

To whom do they donate?

 

Major share, 39.6% of 1368 crores was donated to Trinamool Congress, 36.8% to DMK, 11.3% to the YSR Congress party. And the remaining amounts donated by the company can be seen on the chart mentioned above. 

Coimbatore lottery tycoon Santiago Martin’s Future Gaming has had several legal run-ins.

  • In April 2022 the ED seized assets worth 409 crore of ‘Lottery King’ Santiago Martin in a money laundering case.
  • ED seized assets worth Rs. 173.48 crore in a money laundering case in July 2022. 
  • On May 2023 ED seized assets valued at Rs 457 crore of lottery King in money laundering case.
  • Also, ED filed charge sheet against Future Gaming and Hotel Services Private Limited 
  • In October 2023 ED searched the premises of Santiago Martin in the Sikkim Lottery scam case. 
  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March 2024 conducted searches of the premises of Santiago Martin in Tamil Nadu as part of a money laundering investigation connected with alleged illegal sand mining in the state, and ten premises including that of Aadhav Arjun, son-in-law of ‘lottery king’ Santiago Martin were searched by the ED in an alleged illegal sand mining case.

It is to be noted that Future Gaming is a registered service provider ‘South Star Rail’ that operates Bharat Gaurav Train from Coimbatore to Shirdi and back.

Both the Reddy’s come from a family of farmers and now are the most successful.

MEIL also has a sister company named Western UP Power Transmission Company Limited

MEIL operates across various sectors, including water management, engineering, construction, manufacturing, transportation, hydrocarbons, defense, and power.

Majority (55.99 % of 1186 crores) was donated to the ruling party of India, the BJP, 16.44% to BRS, and 10.79% to the Congress party and the remaining amounts donated by the company can be seen in the below mentioned donut chart.

Vedanta limited 

Vedanta Limited is an Indian multinational mining and metals company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra was founded on 25 June 1965. It is a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources Limited, which is incorporated in England and Wales. Vedanta Limited is one of the largest companies in India by market capitalization. 

Additionally, it explores and produces oil & gas domestically and generates electricity for its operations and grid sales. The company has been involved in a number of controversies, including environmental pollution and allegations of human rights abuses.

Anil Agarwal is the founder and chairman of Vedanta Resources, a multinational mining and metals conglomerate. He is known as the “Metal King” of India. Agarwal started small, with a scrap metal business in Patna, India. He grew the business into Vedanta, which was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2003.

To whom do they donate?

Majority (57.19% of 402.4 crore) was donated to the ruling party of India, the BJP, 31% to Congress, and 9.94% to Biju Janata Dal And the remaining amounts donated by the company can be seen on the screen.

Anil Agarwal-led Vedanta Group donated ₹230.15 to the ruling party BJP.

Qwik Supply Chain Private Limited

Qwik Supply Chain Private Limited is an unlisted Indian company that provides warehousing, storage, and transportation services. It was incorporated on November 9, 2000, with a registered address at Navi Mumbai’s Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City. Vipul Pranlal Mehta has been a director on the board of Qwik since December 10, 2019. 

A majority stake (over 50%) is held by companies with strong links to Reliance Industries Limited, including Reliance Group Support, Reliance Fire Brigade, and Reliance Hospital Management but Despite the evidence, Reliance Industries has denied ownership of Qwik Supply Chain.

Laxmidas V merchant has held various roles including ‘Director’ in Reliance Group of Companies. Laxmidas Vallabhdas Asmita merchant’s share of electoral bonds is from one party only and it is BJP.

 

Qwik Supply and Maxmidas V Asmita Merchant bought Rs 435 crore bonds between 2021-22 and 2023-24.

To whom do they donate? 

Majority (91.95% of 4350000000) was donated to the ruling party of India, the BJP, 5.75% to Shiv Sena, and 2.29% to NCP.

RP Sanjiv Goenka Group companies

RP Sanjiv Goenka Group companies including Haldia Energy Limited, Dhariwal infrastructures limited, PCBL limited and RPSG ventures limited bought electoral bonds worth 540 crores. 

To whom do they donate? 

Majority of their share 76.67% went to Trinamool Congress Party followed by BJP with 19.63% of their shares.

Aditya Birla Group

Aditya Birla Group of companies including Essel Mining and Industries, ABNL Investment, Utkal Alumna International Limites, Grasim Industries, Birla Carbon and Birla Estates Private Limited altogether donated Rs. 743.3 crores and the major part went to BJP.

According to information from the State Bank of India provided by the Election Commission, at least 14 of the top 30 companies that bought electoral bonds between April 12, 2019, and January 24, 2024, were the target of investigations by federal or state agencies.
