The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has taken a policy decision to allow the private sector in the transport service to deal with the loss-making state transport sector, and arrangements are being made to allow the private sector to operate 1,000 buses in Chennai in the first phase, and the transport department said that 25 percent of the bus transport will be privatized gradually across Tamil Nadu, reported Dinamalar a few days ago.
After the media reports that government transport is privatized, leaders of many political parties like Tamil Nadu BJP, Naam Tamilar Party, Makkal Needhi Mayyam, Pudhiya Tamilagam Party, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam have condemned the government.

Also, various political parties and social media users were opposing and condemned that government buses should not be privatized. The Tamil Nadu government did not respond to this.
Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar, clarified on the news of privatizing government bus operation, “There is no plan to privatize Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. There is no room for talk of privatization of government buses. People who cannot bear the reputation of the government are spreading such rumours.”

Before this, last May, rumours were spread that the Tamil Nadu government had increased the bus fare mentioning an old fare list as the new bus fare. It is noteworthy that even then, Minister Shivshankar had explained that it was a rumour.
