The social activists are opposing the plan of the Central government to shift the National Institute of Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) at Muttukadu, Chennai to the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) in Secunderabad.
The Central government’s Ministry of Affairs, Social Justice and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has initiated NIEPMD in Tamil Nadu in 2005. The institution provides special education including the training that they require and also researches on multiple disabilities.

The senior Journalist and Bal Sahitya Puraskar awardee, S.Balabharathi has taken to his Twitter page that the TN CM should find a solution by interfering with the Central government’s decision in merging TN‘s NIEPMD with Secunderabad‘s NIEPID.
Yes. Balabharathi said, “One who has both hearing and intellectual disabilities is mentioned as a person with multiple disorders. It requires training to handle these kids. The training and research have started in 2005 at NIEPMD Muttukadu. This institute has helped thousands of disabled kids in the last 15 years. And it is the head institute in Tamil Nadu.
NIEPID was started even before that in Secunderabad. But this institute handles people with intellectual disabilities alone where NIEPMD in Tamil Nadu takes care of multiple disabilities. Now the Central government is planning to merge both the institutions which was known through the Lawyer Abinaya. We are trying to take it to the notice of TN CM.
Though NIEPID in Secunderabad is the best institution, it only takes care of people with intellectual disabilities. We can have a branch of it in Tamil Nadu. But merging the institutions and changing the head office is unnecessary“.
NIEPMD is the only institution in India that operates in Tamil Nadu. The social activists are claiming that if it is merged with NIEPID in Secunderabad, then we should seek the head office to get important decisions and approvals on education and medical treatment.
