Tamil Nadu CM M.K.Stalin’s announcement on celebrating Thanthai Periyar’s birthday as social justice day received great appreciation. On September 17th, people paid homage to Periyar on his birthday by offering garlands to his idols statewide.
In front of the Salem DMK MP S.R.Parthiban’s office, 40 feet high cutout of Periyar was placed and the party members paid tribute by organising a cultural event. They also offered ‘paal abishegam’ to the Periyar’s cutout.

DMK MP S.R.Parthiban to the reporters, “I didn’t expect this. A 40 feet high Periyar cutout was placed in front of the Salem office. Salem law college students have poured milk over his cutout saying that he is the real hero. Though we say that the culture is against Periyar’s thoughts, youths today claim that Periyar is their hero”.
The DMK MP has said that the culture of offering milk over the cutout is against Periyar’s policies but has given a new explanation that the students are considering him as their hero. DMK MP S.R.Parthiban joined DMK in 2016 from DMDK.
When people claim that it is wrong to offer ‘paal abishegam’ to the cutouts of film actors, it looks contradictory when the people who follow Periyar who spoke rationalism, and who consider him as their hero do the same. This sets a wrong example for the youths.
