Although many people have shared Subramanian Swamy’s post, and another party has commented that he has posted false information. Not only Subramanian Swamy but many others have been comparing India’s petrol prices with their neighbours.

As on February 3, petrol was selling at Rs 92.86 a litre in Mumbai, India’s leading financial hub. 86.30 / – in the capital Delhi.

As on February 1, 2021, a litre of petrol in Sri Lanka sells for 161 (LKR) Sinhala rupees. At its Indian value, a litre of petrol costs Rs 61 (India 1 rupee = 2.65 Sinhala rupees).

As on February 1, a litre of petrol in Nepal sells for 110 (NPR) Nepali rupees. At its Indian value, a litre of petrol costs Rs 69 (Indian 1 rupee = 1.59 Nepali rupees).

As Subramanian Swamy’s tweet, a litre of petrol in Sita Devi-born Nepal costs 69 rupees, not 53 rupees. Similarly, the price of petrol in Sri Lanka where Ravana born is not 51 rupees but 61 rupees (in Indian currency). Although the price of petrol and diesel sold in neighbouring countries is higher in that country, where it is lower when converted to the Indian rupee.

In India, higher taxes on petrol and diesel have pushed up their prices. It has been also announced that a new agricultural chess tax on petrol and diesel will be added in the current 2021 budget filing.

The price of petrol in countries like India, Sri Lanka and Nepal is not as high as Subramanian Swamy’s tweet. However, they are 20, 30 rupees less compared to India.
