Why does Hindutva want you to keep weapons at home?

Terror accused & BJP MP Pragya Thakur asks Hindus to have weapons in their houses. But, why?

Pragya Singh Thakur is a Member of Parliament from Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency in a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. She has been a member of the affiliate organizations of the right-wing such as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) etc throughout her life. Pragya Singh Thakur is a terror accused in the 2008 Malegoan bombings.

In the annual convention of Hindu Jagarana Vedike in Shivamogga, Karnataka, Pragya Thakur had asked Hindus to keep weapons at their homes. She said, “Keep weapons in your houses. Keep at least the kitchen knives used to cut vegetables sharp if you have nothing else. Don’t know what situation will arise. If someone infiltrates our house and attacks us, giving a befitting reply is our right” as she pointed out the murder of Harsha in February 2022 which resulted in widespread violence in the city.

This is not the first time a person from the right wing had asked Hindus to keep weapons in their houses. In a joint event of the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) that took place in Jodhpur, Rajasthan on 14th December 2022, similar calls were made to the Hindus to keep weapons in the houses. The event was live streamed on Facebook. See here. Some have even made comparisons of Hindu extremism with the Islamic extremism.

In the video, the speaker (identity not verified by us yet) says that the Christians and Muslims are the top 2 enemies of Hindus and he also claims that Adolf Hitler considered Hindus to be the most superior race in the world and he would send German women to have children with Hindu men.

There have been many instances of hate speech from the right wing where there have been either direct or indirect threats of violence against the Muslim communities and several calls of economic boycott of Muslims have been made by BJP’s top personalities including a Member of Parliament from West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, Parvesh Verma and an MLA from UP, Suresh Tiwari.

Pragya Thakur had earlier kicked up a controversy in 2019 when she called Nathuram Godse, the murderer of Mahatma Gandhi, a “patriot” which prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to issue a statement on the controversy created by his party member, which is extremely rare. In his statement, Modi said that he would never be able to forgive Pragya Thakur for insulting “bapu”.

However, Pragya Thakur went on to call the killer of Mahatma Gandhi as a “patriot” many times after that, including inside the Parliament but Prime Minister Modi had not responded to any of those statements made by the terror accused, who is out in the public thanks to the bail she received on medical grounds. Despite that, she has been seen playing cricket & Kabaddi on various occasions but has sought exemption on health & security grounds for appearing in Court for the Malegaon bombings case.

Pragya Thakur made a controversial statement about the officer who handled her bombing case too. Hemant Karkare was the former Anti-Terrorism Squad officer who was martyred in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and also handled Pragya Thakur’s Malegaon case.

Pragya Thakur had also made a rash statement when she said, “Brahmins don’t take offence when they are identified by their caste, then why do ‘shudras’?” The reason given by Pragya Thakur was that shudras are ignored.

With this kind of track record, Pragya Thakur had now asked Hindus to keep weapons, despite being a terror accused out on bail due to health reasons, notwithstanding the constitutional position, the Member of Parliament. She even gets support from many quarters of the right-wing ecosystem. Kishore K Swamy, a frequent spreader of misinformation & a person who is facing multiple cases for insulting the modesty of women, had come in Thakur’s defence by claiming that she did not specify that she was talking against Muslims, but the rhetoric of the right wing needs no introduction.

As pointed out earlier, Pragya Thakur is not alone in asking Hindus to keep weapons at home. The VHP and Bajrang Dal too have been calling for the same. In fact, these militant organizations have announced that they will be distributing swords & knives.

Let’s take a look at the chronology of these events.

Dec 5, 2022 – VHP Leader announces that swords, knives will be distributed.

Dec 14, 2022 – Calls for Hindus to keep weapons made in VHP & Bajrang Dal public rally.

Dec 26, 2022 – Pragya Thakur calls for Hindus to keep weapons at home.

So, the question remains, why is there a sudden rush in asking Hindus to keep weapons at home from various organizations of the right-wing? It is also baffling to think how long will the law take to catch up with Pragya Thakur’s statements and actions that are not in line with the bail terms for a person who is accused of terrorism and is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court.

It was reported that Shivamogga Police had said no case has been registered since no made any complaint. Trinamool Congress’ spokesperson Saket Gokhale made a tweet on 27th December 2022 that he had filed a complaint with the Shivamogga Police Station.

However, the Shivamogga Police had responded that the complainant needs to be physically present in the Police Station to take the complaint, citing an old Supreme Court judgement in the case of Lalita Kumari, which Saket Gokhale had disputed and warned that he would go to the Supreme Court if the case is not filed by the Shivamogga Police.
