Explanation

An NDTV news anchor is seen in the uploaded one-minute, forty-eight-second video reporting on the topic of “Kolkata in panic over fake doctors.” Ajay Tewari, Naren Pandey, and Ram Shankar Singh are among the people depicted in the film who were detained for pretending to be doctors to the public several years ago.

In the video, physician Nirmal Majhi, who is in charge of the West Bengal Medical Council, speaks with reporters. These doctors have allegedly sold bogus medical credentials before being jailed. The film concludes with a discussion of the West Bengal phony physicians’ scam.

What’s the truth?

Using pertinent keywords such as “Kolkata fake doctors” and “NDTV news about fake doctors in Kolkata,” we began our analysis. Additionally, we performed a basic Google reverse image search technique using the keyframes from the popular video.

This led us to the YouTube of NDTV news dated June 9, 2017. The video was uploaded with the title “6 Fake Doctors Arrested In Bengal In A Month, 3 From Top Kolkata Hospitals.” When we looked into the description box of the video it read “Six fake doctors have been arrested in West Bengal in the last month. A seventh person was arrested for selling fake MBBS certificates. According to latest reports, large quantities of fake medicines too have been seized in Hooghly district.” This information confirms that the viral video is old.

We took this as a cue and searched further and found a tweet by the CID West Bengal. The X post is captioned as “One more fake medical doctor Ajay Tiwary arrested from Kolkata. So far six persons have been arrested. Gathered details about many more” and was posted on June 4, 2017.

This story was featured in an exclusive report by NDTV, which you can read here along with the viral video.

This means the viral video is not a recent occurrence, despite what the allegation implies, as confirmed by the facts presented above.

Conclusion:

We therefore conclude that the widely shared assertion—accompanied by a video purporting to show fake doctor arrest—that Kolkata is the new crime capital is misleading. The extensively circulated report is accurate, although the footage is from 2017, not a current incident as the headline implies.
