Explanation

The internet is overflowing with pictures and videos pitting the opposing parties against one another as the elections draw near.

In this instance, a 46-second video depicts a crowd of people, the majority of whom are wearing green t-shirts, waving a green flag that has a star and a crescent moon on it. They are chanting loudly in Malayalam. When we translated it we could hear them saying, “Let this time, CPM candidate sit at home, smoke a beedi and read Desabhimani (Newspaper), let LDF candidate Satheesh Chandran sit at home. Let UDF candidate Unnithan win and go to parliament. Rahul Gandhi Zindabad! Let the Modi rule be destroyed! Let fascism be destroyed!”. This post is shared with a claim, “This is NOT Pakistan. Wayanad is the constituency of Rahul Gandhi in Kerala, India.” Similar claim posts can be seen here and here.

What’s the truth?

We started our analysis with the keyframes of the viral video which led us to a similar video uploaded by a social media user namely ‘Nationalist Abhishek Gupta (Modi’s family)’ on his X page. Interestingly, when we looked at the date posted it showed as May 26, 2019. This means the video is old.

When we intensified our search, it took us to the same video uploaded by another Facebook user Akhil Pandey. Also, the video was posted on 24 May 2019. Both these videos describe the video as ‘election result victory at Wayanad’. However, it is identified that the video was not taken in Wayanad but in Kasargod. We found a shop named ‘Aramana Silks’ in the video and when looking for it in the Google maps, we located it at Kerala’s Kasargod. The nearby shops also matched with the 360 degree view found in Google.

Coming to the claim that they showed the Pakistan flag during the victory is false and misleading as they were holding the IUML’s flag if you look closer. We have made an image comparison for the reader’s understanding.

Moreover, we have also attached the comparison image of the Pakistan and Indian Muslim League flag for the reader’s reference below.

With all of this information, it is confirmed that the widely shared video is from 2019. Based on the audio, it appears that the video was shot before the 2019 elections and has nothing to do with the current political campaign.

Conclusion:

Therefore, we conclude that the widely shared video which purports to show the Pakistani flag in Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi’s constituency in Kerala, India, is untrue and misleading. In actuality, the video is from 2019, with no connection to the ongoing electoral campaign. And the flags seen in the video belong to Indian Union Muslim League.
