Explanation

Iran’s media confirmed on May 20 that President Ibrahim Raisi had died in a helicopter crash. He was on his way back from participating in the inauguration of dams near the Azerbaijan border when he died in the helicopter crash, media reported.

Meanwhile, a one-minute clip purporting to show Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi’s helicopter crash is widely shared on social media. Here, we see a chopper plummeting and crashing within the hills in the viral video. You can view a similar claim post here.

What’s the truth?

Upon conducting a Google reverse image search analysis of the video’s keyframes, it was discovered that there is no correlation between this film and the footage of the Iranian president’s helicopter accident.

This same video was posted on the YouTube page “Mickpreet” on August 22, 2022, titled “Helicopter Crash Panama, #Dimitri Flores #crash #helicopter.” When we looked into the description box of the video it read A helicopter crashed in Panama with presidential candidate Dimitri Flores on board. Everyone survived.”

Using this as a clue, we conducted additional research and obtained a different YouTube video from 9 News Australia that discussed the same event that occurred on August 17, 2022. According to the video’s description box “2024 presidential candidate Dimitri Florez and six others are lucky to be alive after dramatic video emerged of the moment their helicopter crash-landed in the deep jungle of Panama.”

Our advanced searches led us to an August 5, 2022, Facebook post carrying the same viral clip with the caption, “Video showing the crash of the Eurocopter AS.350BA,  #Panama registration HP1806RK (C/N 2030), on a mountain in the Jaramillo area, near the town of Boquete, in the Chiriquí province. The six souls on board survived.”

All of this suggests that people on social media are misrepresenting the film of the helicopter crash in Panama in 2022 as a more current video of the incident involving Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Conclusion:

In our search, we found out that the video circulating on social media claiming to be Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi’s helicopter crash is an old video from the Panama helicopter crash in 2022.
