Mumbai Police filed a case and arrested five individuals among Mufti Salman Azhari’s followers who gathered outside Ghatkopar police station after his detention for a hate speech case. The 3,000-strong crowd blocked LBS Road, allegedly threw stones at a BEST bus, and later, Azhari was sent to Gujarat for further investigation. The FIR names 16 accused, with the police reviewing CCTV footage to identify others involved.

Meanwhile, in a 6-second viral video, we can see a Muslim man throwing a stone and breaking the front glass of the red bus. This is shared to claim that stone pelting is in the Muslim DNA.

What is the Truth?

We ran a reverse search using the keyframes of the viral video, and we found the full original video posted on the News4India YouTube channel on January 28, 2017.

In this video, at timestamp 00:30, we can also see another man throwing stones continuously on the red bus. The original video description states that ‘An accident occurred when a bus driver hit a pedestrian on the Satyanagar BRTS road in Udhana, Surat. The pedestrian was shifted to the hospital for treatment due to serious injuries. People pelted stones on the bus’.

So according to this, we can identify that a Muslim man’s throwing stone video portion is clipped and shared to give a communal color, but it’s actually from an accident that took place at Satyanagar BRTS road in Udhana, Surat, when a bus driver hit the pedestrian, and then a nearby resident got angry, and later they gathered and started pelting the stones on the bus.

Similar news was reported by the Times of India on January 29, 2017.

This viral video was falsely shared to give communal colour, but it’s from the accident that occurred in Surat 7 years ago.
