Explanation

In September 2020, the Union BJP government passed three agricultural bills at random without seeking input from farmers or the Parliament. Thousands of farmers protested against the laws and in support of corporate companies by marching towards Delhi. Subsequently, the Union Government revoked the Acts.

The government promised at the time to guarantee a minimum support price and to drop the lawsuits it had filed against farmers for participating in the protest. The farmers are currently staging a protest and marching back towards Delhi because their demands are still not being met. In addition to other measures, the government and police have stopped them by planting barbed wire fences and putting tear gas shells in the farmers’ paths.

In this case, several videos that connect it to the ongoing protest by farmers have gone viral online. This 23-second viral video shows a group of men standing near some enormous blue plastic drums. At this point, we can see that a brown liquid is inside the drums. When watching the video, several men can be seen standing in a crowd with plastic transparent cups in their hands, pleading with the men above to pour the drink. This post is shared with a claim stating, that on camera,  they do emotional Blackmail that we are “Anndata” and behind the camera, they Enjoy alcohol at Protest. The post is shared with the hashtag 2024 farmers protest. You can view related posts with similar claims here, here, here, and here.

What’s the truth?

When we started analyzing the viral video with all the keyframes it led us to a Facebook post from 2021.  The post is captioned in Hindi as “Daru Bhandara” which when translated means “Alcohol Fest.”

We took that as a cue and searched the internet with relevant keywords, which led to a YouTube video that showed the same setup where people had large blue drums filled with alcohol. The YouTube video is described as “Baba Rodu Sah Ji Village Kaunke Kalan.”

During our investigation, we learned that Kaunke Kalan is a village in Ludhiana. The custom of giving alcohol to Baba Rodu Shah has been observed for many years in the village. Before distributing the alcohol as prasad among themselves, devotees bring it and offer it to Baba Rodu Shah.

All this confirms that the video has been on the internet since 2021 from the Baba Rodu Shah fair and is not related to the current farmer’s protest in Delhi.

Conclusion:

We thus conclude that the widely shared video, which purports to show farmers enjoying alcohol during the protest, is wholly untrue.

Actually, the video is old and from the Baba Rodu Shah fair, which happens in September each year in Ludhiana. We now know that providing alcohol has been a long-standing tradition.
