Explanation

Rahul Gandhi visited the poll bound state of Gujarat by taking a small detour from his Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign and held a public meeting in Rajkot and Surat on 21st November 2022. A video from one of those rallies is spread in social media showing Rahul Gandhi’s translator leaving the stage and asking Rahul Gandhi to continue in Hindi. This video is virally shared by the supporters and party members of Bhartiya Janata Party and also Aam Aadmi Party with a claim that Rahul Gandhi’s translator leaves the stage mid-way of Rahul Gandhi’s speech without translating as he couldn’t understand what Rahul was saying. Some of those claims can be seen here, here, here, here, here and here. BJP’s IT wing head Amit Malviya also ridiculed the issue.

What’s the truth?

With a keyword search, we were able to find the video of the Surat rally uploaded in the Indian National Congress.

In the video that is 51 minutes and 50 seconds long, Rahul Gandhi can be seen speaking in Hindi and his speech is translated in Gujarati by a translator. We can see the part which is being virally shared at around the 38:00 mark. A voice of a man, presumably from the crowd, can be clearly heard saying Rahul Gandhi to continue in Hindi and they don’t need a translation.

Following that, the translator Bharatsinh Solanki can be seen telling Rahul Gandhi that Hindi speech is enough implying that the translation is not needed and he gestures to the crowd to be calm and shows a thumbs up. Rahul Gandhi also can be seen asking the crowd “Chalega?” and crowd can be heard cheering in agreement. After this, Bharatsinh Solanki gets off the stage. A small portion of the video is cut and shared virally in social media by the BJP, AAP and their supporters, that the translator couldn’t understand Rahul Gandhi and left without translating his speech.

Solanki also released a video clarifying the controversy of what happened on the stage.

Conclusion

In our search, we find the claim that Rahul Gandhi’s translator walks off the stage without translating Rahul Gandhi’s speech as he couldn’t understand what Rahul is telling to be misleading. The crowd asked for Rahul Gandhi to continue in Hindi without a Gujarati translator and thus the translator left after conveying to Rahul Gandhi that Hindi speech alone is enough.
