Chandrayaan-3 is a Moon lander and rover mission by India’s space agency ISRO. Chandrayaan-3 is the third and most recent Indian lunar exploration mission which consists of a lander named Vikram and a rover named Pragyan similar to Chandrayaan-2.

The spacecraft was successfully launched on 14 July 2023. It is expected to touch down in the Moon’s south polar region around August 23 or 24. This is equipped with science instruments designed to deepen our understanding of the Moon. Following this, the Indian Space Research Organization on August 21 posted four photos on its official Twitter account claiming to be distant images of the moon taken by Chandrayaan-3 on August 19.

In the meantime, the above viral clip of 10- seconds states that the Earth looks beautiful from the moon and we are able to see the blue planet Earth rising up with a glow around it. This video was shared by many curious enthusiastic users with similar claims which can be seen here, here, here and here.

And it doesn’t stop there some users have shared another set of videos claiming that the spacecraft Chandrayaan -3 has sent real videos and pictures of the moon. This clip is shared widely among social media with similar claims which can be viewed here, here and here. Some other images are also being shared claiming to be captured by Chandrayaan 3. Come, let’s check the veracity of the above claims.

What is the truth?

Claim-1 Fact Check

When we started our research with the first claim, we were shocked to find out the truth that the viral clip was an AI-generated and edited video. What is more interesting is that the user namely “Mithilesh Keshari” is the first person to share this sensational clip and he himself said in the next post that it was AI-generated, he further added that people should use some common sense that no one reached with such HD camera to shoot Video.

Thus, its clearly evident now since the user himself clarified the false claims that the viral clip showing the Earth rising from the moon is an AI-generated version.

Claim-2 Fact Check

Here when we started our research with the simple Google reverse image process, we found to match the photo on the i-Stock website, and it was titled – “Textured surface of the moon close-up in motion. 3d illustration. Elements of this image furnished by NASA” and the date of posting was December 03, 2020. Through this, it is clear that this photo has been posted on the websites since 2020, claiming that it was taken by NASA. The images are credited to ‘Flash Movie’.

The same video circulating on social media is found on the website “Flash movie” with a title ‘Textured surface of the moon close-up in motion. 3d animation. Elements of this image furnished by NASA’. This proves that the above viral clip is a 3D animated one which is circulated with false narratives.

However, when we searched on ISRO’s official pages for the viral video, we got these clippings which has the compiling photos of the moon, posted on August 22. Apart from this they have not released any other video like the viral claims of social media.

Claim-3 Fact Check

When we started our research with the Google reverse image process, we came to know that this image was shot by the photographer @daryavaseum with the description, “Why Does the Moon Turn Red? The reason why the Moon takes on a reddish color during totality is a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. It is the same mechanism responsible for causing colorful sunrises and sunsets, and for the sky to look blue. Gear: Celestron nexstar 8SE + canon eos 1200D”. Moreover, this image was uploaded by him on his instagram page on 20 November 2021.

The same image was also found in the website under the name of the same photographer which states, “I Finished editing my clearest moon image ever after many days of post processing and merging 400 RAW images.(OC)”

This makes everything clear that this image was shot in 2021 and edited by a photographer namely Daryavaseum and not a recent image by Chandrayaan-3.

Therefore, we conclude through our investigation that the visuals circulating with claims that they are captured by Chandrayaan-3 are actually old and not captured by our Chandrayaan-3.

Likewise, we remind our readers that not all we see on social media pages are real. A few of the videos and images are old and unrelated and also shared with false narratives. So, kindly the check the facts before sharing anything in social media.
