Explanation

General elections in India are scheduled to take place seven times between April 19, 2024, and June 1, 2024. The results will be released to the public on June 4, 2024, following the vote-counting process. The first and second phases of the Lok Sabha election have finally wrapped. With India preparing for the third phase, both parties are running strong back-to-back campaigns.

In this instance, Home Minister Amit Shah speaks at a public rally in a 16-second video. He is heard saying that the ST, SC, and OBC reservations will be canceled as soon as the BJP administration takes power. The user has added the hashtag election 2024 to the video. This post is shared with a claim stating, “Will cancel ST, SC and OBC reservations if BJP govt is formed again.: Amit Shah.” Come, let’s check if the claim is true.

What’s the truth?

We began our investigation using Google’s keyword search and viral keyframes. This directed us to a video that NDTV uploaded to YouTube on April 24, 2023. This means the viral clip is old.

The video is 25 seconds longer with the title “Amit Shah Vows To Scrap Muslim Quota in Telangana.” In this video, we can hear him saying “Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday vowed to scrap the reservations for Muslims in Telangana if the BJP forms the government in the state. Addressing the rally at Chevella near Hyderabad, Amit Shah slammed religion-based reservations, calling them “unconstitutional”.

We took that as a cue and searched further and found the same clip on the Home Minister’s YouTube page. The entire video, which was live-streamed on April 23, 2023, can be seen here.

The video was captioned “HM Amit Shah addresses ‘Vijaya Sankalp Sabha’ in Chevella, Telangana.” At approximately 14:41 in the timestamp, we can hear him discussing removing Muslim reservations in the state.

He also went on to add that, “If the BJP is voted to power, then the unconstitutional Muslim reservation will be ended in the state. This right belongs to Telangana’s SC, ST, and OBC communities and they will get this right. We will end Muslim reservations.” The speech mentioned above is audible from timestamp 14:47 to 14:50.

All of this data demonstrates that the widely shared video featuring Amit Shah’s claim about the reservations for SC, ST, and OBC people has been edited and spread with false information.

Furthermore, the widely shared video is erroneously associated with the current Lok Sabha election campaign, but it actually originates from an election rally in 2023.

Conclusion:

Thus, we conclude that the viral video claiming Amit Shah saying once the BJP government is formed they will end the reservations of SC, ST, and OBC is fake and doctored. In reality, he said that he would only end the unconstitutional Muslim reservation.
