The viral post features an image of Israeli soldiers. It’s also noticeable that in the widely shared photo, the soldiers are holding both an ISIS and an Israeli flag.

This post is shared with a claim stating, “Israel is ISIS.” You can view similar claim posts here and here.

What’s the truth?

We started our analysis with the simple reverse image process which led us to the original image. According to the news report of JNS, “A group of 12 Israeli soldiers and commanders departed for Morocco on Sunday to participate in the international “African Lion 2023” military exercise.” The Israel Defence Forces joined the two-week exercise as an international military observer last year, but this is the first time they have actively participated in it.

This article featured the widely shared photo of the same soldiers holding flags. Remarkably, one displayed the identical Israel flag, while the other featured green and yellow hues.

When we read the article, we also discovered a tweet by the IDF’s official Twitter account posted on June 5, 2023. The post carries the same image along with the caption, “A delegation of 12 fighters and commanders from the Golani patrol unit left yesterday for the ‘African Lion 2023’ exercise led by the land arm that is taking place in Morocco. About 18 countries and about 8,000 soldiers from the US army, Morocco, and Ghana are participating in the exercise”.

This image also shows the same green and yellow flag along with the Israel flag on their hands. This confirms that the viral image showing the ISIS flag is edited and circulated with false narratives.

We have also attached a comparison image for the reader’s reference below.

All the above information clarifies that the viral image is fake.

Thus we conclude that the viral image with soldiers holding the Israel flag along with the ISIS flag is digitally altered. In reality, the soldiers were holding a green & yellow color flag related to Morocco’s ‘African Lion’ Military exercise.
