An old image of ISIS burning 2 Turkish soldiers is mispresented as Hamas killing Israeli soldiers.

Claim

See the cruel face of Hamas extremists. This inhuman and barbaric deeds video has been made by Hamas extremists in which two Israeli soldiers are being tied with chains, strapped with bombs, and their bodies set on fire as they die in pain. Despite this, some traitors are still supporting Hamas. The Hamas extremists should be wiped out and we should support.

Explanation

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched surprise attacks against Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing hundreds of civilians. Israel retaliated by declaring war on Hamas and attacking Gaza from the air and on the ground, killing over 11,500 Palestinians so far. The internet is flooded with numerous images and videos linking it with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

This is the case of a widely circulated image that claims that two Israeli soldiers were killed by the extremist Hamas through torture and eventual fire death. An earlier version of these posts published in October can be seen here and here.

What’s the truth?

Upon examining the keyframes of the widely circulated image using Google’s reverse image search, we discovered that foxnews.com media released an article titled “Gruesome ISIS video shows Turkish soldiers burned Alive” on December 23, 2016 with similar images. The article states “The Islamic State terror group has released a ghastly video that appears to show two captured Turkish soldiers being burned alive.”

In a similar vein, an article on alarabiya.net claims that the 19-minute video was shot in the northern Syrian region that ISIS has declared to be its “Aleppo province.” Speaking in Turkish, the killer of the two men is heard in the video verbally attacking Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and demanding that “destruction be sowed” in Turkey.

All of the aforementioned data confirms that the widely distributed image is misleading and unrelated to the present-day conflict scenarios between Israel and Palestine. Moreover, the picture is outdated.

Conclusion:

We, therefore, conclude that the widely circulated rumour that the image is of Hamas burning two Israeli soldiers alive is untrue. The picture depicts the burning of two Turkish soldiers by ISIS in 2016, and it has nothing to do with Israel or Hamas.
