Explanation

In the 40-second viral video, we can see a ship sailing in a distance on the seawater. Suddenly the ship catches fire and we can hear people screaming the verses of “Allah- hu- akbar” along with many other Islamic chants from another ship. Since the video is shaky, the footage is not so clear.

This clip is shared with claims stating, “US Navy destroyer USS Carney was allegedly attacked by drones in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. This would be another step closer towards WWIII.” This same post was also shared by social media users and can be seen here and here. Come, let’s check the authenticity of this viral claim.

What’s the truth?

These viral videos are circulated amidst the report from France24.com published on 23 October 2023, titled “US pointing out Iran assisting base attacks, confirms advisors in Israel.” According to the article, ‘The United States accused Iran on Monday of “actively facilitating” attacks on US forces in the Middle East as it confirmed it had sent a small number of military advisors to Israel.’ Such news creates more panic amid the current tension of the Israel-Hamas war.

When we started our research with the keyframes of the viral video, we found many news articles carrying the same image of the attack on the ship but dated back to 2017. Business Insider, Sky News, and Sputnik (a Russian news outlet) all these reports have written articles with the same image from the above viral clip. This proves that the video is old and from 2017 not a recent one as claimed by the social media users.

According to the above articles, “Saudi Arabia’s state news agency says Houthis used suicide boats which caused the explosion on the ship. It also added that the vessels hit the ship off the western coast of Yemen on Monday, causing an explosion that killed two crew members and injured three others.”

Another report stated that, ‘Iranian state-media claimed the attack was carried out by Houthi militants in Yemen against a Saudi Arabian navy vessel. The media cites a source as saying the vessel had 176 sailors and officers, as well as a combat helicopter, on board at the time of the attack.’

The above articles, clearly prove that, the viral video is more than six years old and not a recent one.

Moreover, we also got the same video uploaded in the YouTube channel namely, ‘EuroNews’ captioned as “Two killed as Houthis attack Saudi warship off Yemen coast” published on 31 January 2017.

This same news was also written as article by the Euronews titled as Two killed as Houthis attack Saudi warship off Yemen coast” published on 31 January 2017.

All these above evidence clarifies that, the viral video circulated with the claim of showing US warship attacked is completely false and untrue.

Conclusion:

Therefore, we conclude that the circulated video claiming that the US warship attacked on the coast of Red Sea by drones is false. In reality, the video shows a six year old Saudi warship attacked by the Houthis.
