Explanation

A 35-second viral video of a policeman beating a group of Muslim people exactly outside the mosque is shared to claim that Indian police are experts in dealing with Muslims because they know that mosques are the source of terrorism.

The same viral video was shared by right-wing supporters and can be seen here, here, and here.

What’s the truth?

We ran a reverse image search using the keyframes of the viral video and found a matching screen grab posted on an ANI article on March 26, 2020. ANI reported that the Karnataka Police thrashed people for violating the coronavirus lockdown in Belgaum on March 26. The incident took place outside a mosque when people were returning after offering prayers.

The same news was covered by many credible media outlets, such as IBC 24, Hindustan Times, The Print, and Business Standard

According to the above-mentioned proofs, it’s not true that the group of Muslims who gathered in the mosque had a terrorism connection. The viral video has been shared to give a false communal color.

In actuality, the Muslim people were beaten by Karnataka police because local Muslims were offering prayers amid the nationwide lockdown.

Conclusion

A 3-years old video of Muslim people thrashed by Karnataka police outside the mosque for violating the nationwide COVID lockdown norms was falsely linked and shared as terrorists were beaten by police outside the mosque.
