An image of the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and his daughter Anjali Birla is shared widely with the claim that Babri Masjid accused Om Birla’s daughter becomes IAS without appearing for the civil service exam. The viral posts in Hindi is translated as “Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla ji daughter Anjali became IAS without exam Congratulations. This claim was viral in the last few years and has been revived again now.

What is the truth?
When searching for ‘Anjali Birla’ on the official site of UPSC, we found the marks of Anjali Birla, daughter of Om Birla in Civil Services Examination.
Anjali Birla’s name is found under the list of recommended candidates (Reserved List), Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2019 on UPSC website. Her Roll Number is identified as ‘0851876’ from the list of 89 candidates.
A press note is found on the UPSC website dated 4, January 2021 regarding filling up the remaining posts based on the civil services examination, 2019 with the 89 candidates from the ‘Reserved List’ as per the recommendation of the Commission as sought by the department of Personnel and Training. This list contains the name of 89 candidates from the above seen list including Anjali Birla’s.
When searching further to know about the ‘Reserved List’, we found an official statement regarding the same on UPSC website. It is mentioned that the Commission maintains a ‘Reserved List of Candidates’ along with the ‘Recommended List of Candidates’ from the Main result.
The candidates who are ranked below the recommended candidates in the merit order are listed as reserved candidates. The statement further clarifies that reserve list is not a waiting list and allowing the reserved candidates to choose a service of higher preference based on their reserved status is an established practice.
The Instagram post of Anjali Birla dated 8, January 2021 also clarifies that she missed being in the first list by 8 marks in the general category. She also mentioned that the claim is a rumour and the UPSC CSE is fair and transparent with no backhand entry.
Conclusion
It is found that the claim that Anjali Birla, daughter of Om Birla did not appear or clear the civil services examinations is false.
