Explanation

Following the conclusion of the Phase 1 of voting for the Lok Sabha elections on the 19th, the Election Commission has reported that 69.46% of voting has been recorded in Tamil Nadu.

In this case, Tamil Nadu BJP state president Annamalai has tweeted a post on his X page saying that a woman named Gomathi from Pakkirimaniyam village near Srimushnam in Cuddalore district was beaten to death by DMK members in front of her family on the day of voting for not voting for the DMK alliance.

And, media such as Dinamalar, Polimer News, have also published this news on their pages. Dinamalar reported, “DMK gang took the life of a woman because she did not vote for Paanai(Pot) symbol” and ‘Polimer News’ published a video stating, “The woman who voted was teased.. The girl who was beaten was beaten to death.. The prelude to the murder”.

Additionally, a lot of BJP members have been observed sharing the same message on social media with a picture of the woman.

What’s the truth?

After examining the news that is being spread, we found an X post of Tamil Nadu Police that said, “Don’t spread false news. Stern legal action follows”.

And, the Cuddalore District Police published news about this on its X page on April 21. In it, “Last 19.04.2024 at around 06.00 in the evening, a verbal dispute occurred between the two parties in front of the banyan tree in Pakkirimaniyam village under Srimushnam police station limits. Both the parties from the same community involved in a brawl while discussing about withdrawing a long pending case filed against Kalaimani.

In this dispute, both parties attack each other unarmed, when Gomathi (Jayakumar’s wife) intervenes and tries to stop the problem, she falls and gets injured. Gomathi was pronounced dead when she was taken to Andimadam PHC for first aid and treatment. In this regard, PS Cr.No. 96/2024 U/s 147, 148, 294 (b), 323, 324, 506(ii), 302 IPC r/w 4 of TN Prohibition of Harassment Act registered on 20.04.2024 at 01.00 hrs. Out of a total of 10 accused, five 1. Kalaimani 2. Deepa (wife of Kalaimani) 3. Ravi 4. Meghanathan and 5. Indumani were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on 20.04.2024.”

Through this, it is known that Gomathi, a woman, fell and suffered injuries that led to her death during the dispute between the two parties over the withdrawal of the case against Kalaimani. However, it is well known that numerous media sources, including Annamalai, fabricated the story, claiming that the DMK party had killed Gomati by beating her to death for casting her vote for the BJP.

Also, in the 1:20 minute of the video released by Polimer News, we can hear saying, “Sir, we have gone to cast vote for BJP. They told us to vote for ADMK (Irattai Ilai), they went to vote for DMK,” the women of the village said in the video, saying that the deceased woman Gomathi had gone to vote, uttering the names of all the parties.

Conclusion:

Our investigation has led us to the conclusion that the media’s claims regarding the beating a woman to in Cuddalore who did not vote for the DMK alliance are false and incorrect.
