The user, Rishi Bagree, is an influential member supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party. He shared a screenshot of a tweet dated November 2012 by Arvind Kejriwal. The Arvind Kejriwal’s post says “As a patriot Indian, my head hangs in shame when our corrupt leaders do not appear before ED and CBI even after multiple summons by the investigating agencies, when they should have resigned from their posts immediately as soon as the allegations were made.” You can view related posts with similar claims here, here, and here.

What’s the truth?

The purported Arvind Kejriwal’s old X post (formerly, Twitter post) was from November 2012. We also noticed that the post is longer than usual, which is an intriguing observation. Using this as a guide, we conducted a Google search using pertinent keywords, which produced several reports.

According to the article from, titled “A Brief History of the Ever-Expanding Tweet” published in September 2017, “The 140 character limit—originally created so that tweets could fit into single SMS messages—is as much a part of the brand as the silhouetted bird.” Also, the article, added, “When people can’t cram their thought into 140 characters, they simply don’t tweet—bad news for a social media platform struggling with a stagnant user base and dwindling use. Starting today, the platform will let a small group of beta testers experiment with a 280-character limit, doubling what can fit into a single tweet.”

This shows that Twitter implemented the 280-character limit starting in 2017. The assertion that the widely shared viral claim is false is made in light of the previous character limit of just 140. The widely shared post indicates that the image was digitally altered because it states 2012 as the year.

We found another article from that addresses the same Twitter character limits when we narrowed down our search.

All of the aforementioned details make it clear that the image is shared as Arvind Kehriwal’s old tweet is fake and has been digitally altered.

Therefore, we draw the conclusion that the widely circulated image purporting to be a modified version of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s 2012 tweet about corruption is spreading misleading information online. The fact that this post displays 257 characters when the actual Twitter character limit for 2012 is only 140 indicates that the image has been altered.
