Explanation

Himachal Pradesh elections are to be held on 12th November 2022 and Rajasthan’s neighboring state Gujarat is set to vote in two phases on 1st and 5th December 2022. There has been a flurry of misinformation spread during this election season. Several high-profile BJP leaders and supporters are sharing a video of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot supposedly saying that people in Rajasthan are suffering. Several BJP members including Laxmikant Bhardwaj, RajyavardhanRathore, Vishnu Vardhan Reddy shared this video in Twitter.

What’s the truth?

When searched for the origin of the video using key frames and keyword search, we found that the video has been uploaded in Ashok Gehlot’s official Twitter page and YouTube channel.

In the commemorative event of the Mangarh Massacre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot shared the stage in which PM Modi said, “Ashok ji and I had worked together as CMs. He was the most senior in our lot of CMs. Ashok ji is still one of the senior-most CMs among those who are sitting on the stage right now.”

There is an ongoing tussle for power between Ashok Gehlot and Former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot in the Rajasthan Congress and for the state’s Chief Minister post. Following Modi’s comments on Gehlot, Sachin Pilot commented that Modi’s praise for Gehlot should not be taken lightly in lieu of the similar praise for Ghulam Nabi Azad by Modi and the following outcome.

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and PM Modi in Mangarh Massacre Commemorative event on Nov 1, 2022.

In the original video uploaded in Ashok Gehlot’s Twitter page and YouTube channel, he was asked about Sachin Pilot’s statement about him, to which Gehlot responded, “They should not make these kinds of statements. Our Secretary Venugopal said not to make these kinds of statements. We want all to follow discipline. We have only one goal. People throughout the country, including Rajasthan, are suffering. They are suffering due to communal tensions, violence, price rise and unemployment. Rahul Gandhi is sweating it out and walking 25 kilometers a day and lakhs of people are walking along with him to create pressure on the Central Government. Our focus should be to form the Government again.”

This statement of Ashok Gehlot has been edited, slightly altered and spread with a misleading claim by the BJP members and supporters. Rajyavardhan Rathore who shared this edited video also made a false claim regarding water connections in Rajasthan and accused the state of being the last in the country.
