Explanation
In an exclusive interview with ANI on June 6, Jaggi Vasudev said, “When we were at university, there was not a year when there were no large-scale religious riots in the country. Every year big riots are going on somewhere. But in at least 5-6 years or 10 years I have never heard of any (religious violence)”.
What is the Truth?
On March 22, 2022, Nithyananda Roy, the Union Home Minister, presented the number of recorded religious riots from 2016 to 2020 in the Lok Sabha. According to the minister, there have been 3,399 religious riots in the country in those 4 years alone.
Similarly, data on the number of religious riots that took place in the country twice between 2012 and 2016 are provided in the Parliamentary reply. According to parliamentary records, 6,285 sectarian riots were reported between 2012 and 2020. In addition, 616 people were killed in sectarian riots between 2012-2017.
Major Religious Riots
It is misinformation to say that there are no large-scale religious riots in India. In February 2020, riots broke out in northeast Delhi between supporters of the CAA Act and those who opposed the law. It became one of the biggest religious riots. The riots killed 53 people and injured more than 50 others.
It is noteworthy that in April 2022, religious riots erupted in 7 states during Ram Navami. Every year, large-scale religious riots have taken place.
Conclusion
Jaggi Vasudev said that there have been no religious riots in the last 10 years. The number of sectarian riots that take place in the country every year is presented in Parliament and we are witnessing large-scale sectarian clashes every year.
