Several people on social media believe that a set of 3D images of former Indian cricket player MS Dhoni is a model of the ancient Indian philosopher Chanakya, made by scientists at Magadha University. Many news outlets with similar claims carried this news can be read here and here. This post was initially tweeted by an X user ‘jerxn_’ which now reached one million views while we were writing this article.

What’s the truth?

We started our analysis with the simple reverse image process, which led us to a website called artstation.com. This site is a place where one can create and learn about artwork.

On this website, under the profile of Indore-based freelance character modeler Ankur Khatri, we came across the widely shared viral image of 3D models that looked like MS Dhoni. The image was captioned as “Hi friends I am doing a likeness study of M.S. Dhoni hope you like it, it’s a wip… project that did not work on hair, it remains.”

When we looked further into the website for more details about the person, we got his resume. According to the resume, he is a digital sculpting modeling artist who creates 3D models using some software. He also listed some of them namely, 3ds Max, Keyshot, Maya, Mudbox, Photoshop, Substance 3D Painter, Zbrush, and 3d Coat.

It’s also noteworthy that the picture was uploaded six years ago rather than recently. Additionally, upon perusing his portfolio, we discovered additional figures of this nature, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cricket player Virat Kohli, actor Hrithik Roshan, and numerous others.

Taking that as a cue, we found his Instagram handle, where he uploaded a similar MS Dhoni video with a step-by-step process explanation in September 2022.

When we researched further, we found that there is no university with the name ‘Magadha DS’ but there is one Magadh University in Bihar. However, no links to any research or making any 3D models of either MS Dhoni or Chanakya is found. We also tried connecting with them regarding this issue but didn’t get a reply, so once we receive it we will update this article.

Thus, the above information clarifies that the viral claim stating Magadha University made 3D models Of MS Dhoni in resemblance to Chanakya is false.

To sum up, we conclude that the viral image of the 3D model of MS Dhoni was created by a freelance character modeler Ankur Khatri, not by Magadha University as the various news outlets suggest.
