In this case, a 48-second video is doing rounds on the internet showing Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman getting annoyed when the journalists question her. We can hear the reporters saying, “Ma’am, they said not good enough.” For this, the Finance Minister asked if you could please repeat their words. Then the journalist conveyed the opposition’s Budget feedback to the Finance Minister. This makes Nirmala Sitharaman irritated and she cuts back and skips the person’s question. This post is uploaded with a claim stating, “Nirmala Sitharaman went arrogant with blood-boiling expressions when the journalists questioned her about the 2024 budget.” You can view related posts with similar claims here, here, and here.
What’s the truth?
When we started analysis of the viral video we noticed the logo of ‘Brut’ in it. Taking this as a cue with some relevant keyword search on Google we found out that the viral video is from last year 2023 and not a recent one.
The Brut India video, titled “This was FM’s reply when a journalist tried to convey the Opposition’s view on Budget,” can be found on YouTube which was uploaded on the date February 1, 2023.
Also, when we advanced our search, we found the whole video which was live-streamed by PIB India on 1 February 2023. When we watched the whole video, we were able to hear the viral part starting around the timestamp of 42:40.
Likewise, this incident was covered by the Mint article which states, “When a reporter pointed out that Opposition parties had said the union Budget 2023 was not good enough, FM Sitharaman said, “Whaaat’?
The video is indeed true, but is from last year 2023 and not from 2024 as the viral claim suggests.
Thus, we conclude that the viral video stating that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman went arrogant with blood-boiling expressions when the journalists questioned her about the 2024 budget is false and misleading. In reality, the video is from 2023.
