A video of some Muslim men demolishing a mosque is shared virally in social media. With that video, it is being claimed that the mosque is being demolished by Pakistan people for taking the iron & steel rods, bricks inside the building and sell it for food. Pakistan is facing a dire economic situation and the country is facing one of the worst economic crises in its history due to various reasons. Similar claims can be seen here, here, here and here.

What’s the truth?

A keyword search led us to several news articles and videos from news outlets containing the same video.

According to the news reports, a mosque belonging to the Ahmaddiyas were demolished by a far-right Islamic outfit called Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in Saddar, Karachi. Ahmadiyya (or simply Ahmadi) are the followers of Islam who consider Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as a prophet of Islam. This belief is considered as wrong/evil form of worship and the Ahmaddiyas are considered heretics in Pakistan.

So, the far-right wing extremist organization had demolished the Ahmaddiya mosque. This is considered to be an attack on the minorities of Pakistan, as Ahmaddiyas are a recognized minority group in Pakistan. A similar mosque was vandalised in December 2022. See here.

Conclusion

In our search, we find that the video of a mosque being demolished in Pakistan is attributed to the country’s poor economic situation. However, the mosques were demolished by far-right Islamic extremist groups as it belonged to the Ahmaddiyas, which they consider to be heretics.
