Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Sudarshan Setu, India’s longest cable-stayed bridge, which connects the Beyt Dwarka and Okha mainland. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was present at the inauguration. The bridge’s distinctive design includes a walkway adorned with Lord Krishna images and Bhagavad Gita verses. With its solar panels installed, the bridge produces one megawatt of electricity.

In this instance, an 18-second viral video shows PM Modi walking on the bridge and waving his hands toward the sea. This post is shared with a claim stating, “Why is PM Modi waving at the fishes?” One can view a similar claim post here.

What’s the truth?

We found the same video that ANI News had uploaded and according to the X post of ANI, the video is captioned as “Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sudarshan Setu, country’s longest cable-stayed bridge of around 2.32 km, connecting Okha mainland and Beyt Dwarka.”

In this video, we see many people in small boats waiting for him and once he waves his hand toward them, they throw the flower petals in response. We also notice that those flowers are yellow as they fall into the water.

When we advanced our search, we found the whole event video livestreamed on PM Narendra Modi’s YouTube channel on 25 February 2024. The video is lengthy with 13 minutes and 57 seconds timeline posted with the title, “PM Modi inaugurates Signature Bridge & views gallery in Dwarka, Gujarat.” The description box says, “PM Modi inaugurated Sudarshan Setu which connects Okha mainland and Beyt Dwarka island built at a cost of around Rs. 980 crores. It is the longest Cable-stayed bridge in the country around 2.32 Km.”

In this video, we observe PM Modi walking across the bridge and standing by its side following the bridge’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. Here, numerous boats with people on board are visible in the water. When Modi waves his hands at them, they respond by waving back and hurling flowers in his direction.

With all this information at hand, it is evident that PM Modi is pointing to the men in the boat with his hands, not the fish as the widely circulated rumor implies.

To sum up, the widely circulated rumor that PM Modi is gesturing towards fish is untrue. He’s actually waving his hands in the direction of the men who are waiting on the boats.
