Explanation

To understand why claims that Rahul Gandhi deleted tweets regarding Savarkar, here’s a quick background. Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the post of Member of Parliament from Wayanad constituency following a 2 year jail term verdict by a Surat Court in a 2019 criminal defamation case. Rahul Gandhi was asked in a press conference if he would apologise for his comments in UK about democracy being in danger in India and also for the 2019 defamation case when he rhetorically asked “But tell me one thing…Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi…how come they all have Modi as common name. How come all the thieves have Modi as the common name?”

Rahul Gandhi responded by saying that his name is not Savarkar but Gandhi & Gandhis do not apologise. For context, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s name is synonymous among the vast section of the general public for writing many mercy petitions in his lifetime.  Now his grandson Ranjit Savarkar had said that he will file a case against Rahul Gandhi for insulting V.D.Savarkar.

Following this, many claims in social media are made that Rahul Gandhi had deleted all tweets about Savarkar from his twitter profile as he feared a case being filed against him. Some of these posts can be seen here, here and here.

What’s the truth?

Through a search tool by Social Blade, it is apparent that Rahul Gandhi had not deleted any of his tweets recently. The tweet count had remained consistent over the past week ever since the controversy began.

The confusion may have been created due to the keyword search that was performed in Rahul Gandhi’s twitter account with the word “Savarkar” which resulted in no results.

Using this, many made the claim based on the assumption that Rahul Gandhi deleted all tweets about V.D.Savarkar. But, this could simply be due to the reason that Rahul Gandhi did not tweet about Savarkar from his twitter profile.

Moreover, the tweets about Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Savarkar are still live in Congress’ social media handles which can be seen here, here, here, here and here.

It is also important to note that, in November 2022, a case was already filed by V.D.Savarkar’s grandson. In 2019, he said that Rahul Gandhi should be beaten in public by Uddhav Thackeray for his comments on V.D.Savarkar.

Many similar false claims have been made against Rahul Gandhi & we have compiled such false claims that are made since the beginning of Rahul’s Bharat Jodo Yatra which can be read using the link below.

Conclusion

The claims that Rahul Gandhi deleted all his tweets about Savarkar is false and misleading, as he did not delete any tweet in the last couple of weeks. Moreover, many tweets about Savarkar based on the statements of Rahul Gandhi are still live in Congress’ twitter handle.

Interestingly, many who tweeted that Rahul Gandhi deleted his tweets about Rahul Gandhi had deleted their tweets after they found out that Rahul Gandhi had not deleted any of his tweets recently.
