Explanation

Seven phases of general elections are scheduled for India between April 19, 2024, and June 1, 2024. Following the vote-counting process, the results will be made public on June 4, 2024. The first three phases of the Lok Sabha election are over. Both parties are running intense back-to-back campaigns.

In this case, a man conversing in front of the army truck is shown in a 2-minute, 14-second video. A few soldiers can also be seen standing close to the truck. In addition to the man in the white shirt, there is another man dressed in yellow. They both appear to be accusing the army personnel while speaking in front of a camera. This post is shared with a claim stating, “The army is being used by the BJP to cast fake votes. INDIAN ARMY has been assigned to do ILLEGAL & FRAUDULENT work for the BJP. What’s the truth?

We started our analysis with a relevant keyword search on Google. This led us to a tweet posted by the ANI on May 1, 2019.

The post is shared with two images of the complaint letter titled ‘Complaint against unidentified miscreants who tried diminish the image of the Indian army.’

The tweet is captioned as “Army officials in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, have filed a complaint against unidentified miscreants for trying to snatch voter ID cards of general voters, obstructing Army voters posted in Cantonment there and circulating videos to malign Army image, on April 29.

We took this as a cue searched further and got our hands on the same video on a YouTube page. This video was posted on May 2, 2019.

Furthermore, on May 3, 2019, an article published in the Times of India covered this same incident. According to the article, the Army has expressed indignation in response to a widely shared video clip in which some troops are accused of canvassing for a political party when they were at a Jabalpur voting station.

All of this data confirms that the widely shared video is from 2019 and has nothing to do with the current Lok Sabha elections, contrary to what the widely shared allegation implies.

Conclusion:

Thus, we conclude that the viral claim stating that the army is being used by the BJP to cast fake votes is false and misleading. In reality, the video is old and from 2019.
