This post was shared with two links namely for reference. The same message was spread on social media by many users including right-wing supporting news portals OpIndia and Kreatively with similar claims which can be seen here, here and here. Come, let’s check the authenticity of the above claims.
What’s the truth?
When we started our research using the available links shared by the user, we found out that there was a clash between two groups of students. According to the article published by ABP Live.Com “Local and Kashmiri students clashed after a scuffle in the mess on Friday (August 25) night at Mewar University, located at Gangrar in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan. The students, divided into two groups, pelted stones fiercely while fighting with each other. Seven youths were injured in this quarrel. While taking action in this matter, the police have taken 36 students into custody so far.”
Regarding this incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police Shravan Das Sant said that “the children in the hostel were eating food in a queue. Two children got entangled with each other over the matter of taking food first and physical fighting took place between them. The children present on the spot resolved the quarrel between the two. After this fight, everyone went to their rooms.
When the students spread this thing in their groups, both the groups gathered and came out in the open inside the campus. During this, there was stone pelting between the two groups, in which about 7 to 8 children were injured. He said that the police had brought the situation under control after reaching the spot. Around 36 children were taken into custody on charges of disturbing the peace. Two cases have been registered in this incident.”
In the whole article, we didn’t see anywhere that the quarrel between the students was due to the celebration of the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3. Yes, there was a clash but it was not as claimed by the social media users.
Moreover, we got another article from Navbharattimes with a similar narration to that of ABP live.com. According to Navbharattimes, “The incident started with a minor scuffle on Friday night at Mewar University. While eating in the mess of the university campus, things went wrong. There was a dispute between the two student groups on a minor issue and a fight started. More than half a dozen people were injured in this quarrel. During this, Kashmiri students have also been accused of vandalizing the mess.
Some videos of this incident have also surfaced on the university campus. In these, Kashmiri students are seen creating a ruckus on the campus, raising slogans of Allah-hu-Akbar. In this incident, more than two dozen Kashmiri students have been accused of attacking the local people. The injured youths were taken to the hospital. One of them has been referred to Udaipur in critical condition. At present, a heavy police force has been deployed outside the campus. Police have appealed to both groups to maintain peace.”
Both the above articles prove that there was an altercation between two groups inside Mewar University which led to this big squabble and stone-pelting among the students and the locals. But, there was no mention of the attack due to the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3 in both articles.
Conclusion:
Therefore, we conclude that, from the above evidence, yes, there was a quarrel between the local and Kashmiri students but it was not regarding the successful launch of Chandrayaan 3 rather it happened while serving food in the mess.
This proves that the viral post was shared with out-of-context and misleading claims by the social media users.
