Explanation

An Ananda Vikatan news card is going viral on social media claiming that Finance Minister of the ruling BJP government, Nirmala Sitharaman, has decided to impose 5% GST even for cremation in electric crematoriums.

What is the truth?

Electric crematoriums charge a fixed fee for cremation. During the Corona wave, there were many complaints that employees were charging exorbitant fees ranging from 5000 to 10000 to cremate the dead bodies. But there is no news about levying GST tax on the cremation of dead bodies in the electric crematorium.

Notifications of the 47th GST Council meeting were provided on June 29, 2022. Among those, there are no recommendations regarding electric crematoriums. On the other hand, the GST rate has been increased from 12% to 18% for work contracts for roads, bridges, railways, metro, effluent treatment plants, crematoriums etc. in the services category.

When Ananda Vikatan Facebook page is searched for the viral news card, no such news card on GST tax for electric crematorium is found. While searching about Nirmala Sitharaman on the Ananda Vikatan page, the news of Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech on February 1, “We have created 60 lakh jobs…” is found.
