Description
When the central government announced that it would implement a 10% reservation in education and employment for the economically backward upper class, they said there would be no impact on the existing reservation. However, in the recent Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) Banking Selection Notice, the percentage for OBC, SC and ST categories has been reduced from 10% to EWS alone.
In the competitive examination conducted for 4 banks namely Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Punjab & Sind Bank and UCO Bank, out of a total of 1,417 seats, 300 seats were allotted to Other Backward Classes, 196 seats to Scheduled Casts and 89 seats to Scheduled Tribals. According to the reservation, 382 seats should be allotted to other backward classes, 212 to the list category and 107 to the tribals. At the same time, 10% (142) of seats are fully allocated to the economically backward classes
Only 21% seats allotted for Other Backward Classes instead of 27%, 13% seats allotted for Scheduled Caste instead of 15% and only 6% seats allotted for the Scheduled Tribes instead of 7.5%.
Of this, 10% is allotted to EWS out of a total of 350 seats in UCO Bank. However, 14 seats for OBC, 35 seats for SC and only 10 seats for ST have been allotted. The reservation is as low as 27% of the seats as a whole. The bank is offering 256 seats in the general competition category.
Former Chennai High Court Judge K. Chandru said, “The Central Government has already issued clear guidelines for UPSC. It would be a blatant violation of the Constitution for the IPBS to reduce the quota of reserved sections to facilitate the EWS system.” the News Indian Express reported.
Explanation
Earlier in the year, SBI Bank had implemented the EWS reservation by reducing the number of General Category seats without reducing the existing quota.
It is not appropriate to increase the general category seats by reducing the existing OBC, SC, ST category, but they didn’t change the existing 10% reservation for the EWS category.
