RRR is the first movie to be played in Cinema theatres in Kashmir after 1947!

An image claiming that RRR is the first movie to be played in cinema theatres in Kashmir after 1947 is being shared on social media.

What is the truth?

Lieutenant Governor of Kashmir, Manoj Sinha inaugurated multipurpose cinema halls in Pulwama and Shopian districts on 18, September 2022 and the valley’s first multiplex in Srinagar on 20, September 2022.

The multiplex with a seating capacity of 520 will be the first cinema theatre in Kashmir after three decades since separatist violence broke out in 1989, reported Business Standard.

There were several cinema halls until the 1980s. The theatres were closed in the 1990s in the face of large-scale militancy. In 1996, efforts were made to reopen two cinema halls which lacked survival. “In 1999, Regal Cinema in Lal Chowk stopped a screening of Pyar Koyi Khel Nahi after militants hurled a grenade in the first week of its opening”, reported The Hindu. Srinagar’s last cinema hall was closed in 1999.

So it is after 23 years that cinema theatres are all set to screen movies in Kashmir. The cinema theatres at Pulwama and Shopian had a special screening of ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and ‘RRR’ directed by Rajamouli on 18, September 2022 on the day of inauguration.

Aamir Khan-starrer ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ was screened on 21, September 2022 in the multiplex at Srinagar on the day of its inauguration.

And regular shows will be from October 1 with the screening of Vikram Vedha, starring Hrithik Roshan and Ponniyin Selvan – I.

RRR and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag were indeed screened on the inauguration day of the cinema theatres in Kashmir but not after 1947. The movies were played after 23 years.
