Explanation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photos have been plastered throughout the country ever since he took office in 2014. Any wall and any surface, both in brick & mortar or virtually, will invariably bear Narendra Modi’s image as part of promotion for some Government Scheme. However, PM Modi’s photos are supposedly now removed from Covid Vaccination certificates which surprised many. There were speculations that the image of PM Modi was removed from the certificates due to the controversy surrounding the Covishield vaccines and the alleged ‘rare’ side effects from them. Many have been speculating that the image was removed from the Covid vaccination certificates to save Modi’s image. There have been some others claiming that the move is a signal for a regime change in the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections. See here and here.

What’s the truth?

We tried downloading the Covid Vaccine certificate from the Union Government’s dedicated site Co-Win and found out that the newly downloaded certificated do not have PM Modi’s image. Upon further search, we found out the image has been removed (temporarily) due to the Model Code of Conduct as part of the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections which are conducted in 7 phases with final phase to be held on June 1st 2024.

There have been prior instances where such measures were taken during state elections as well which can be seen here, here and here.

Conclusion

PM Modi’s photos are removed from the vaccination certificates due to the guidelines of the Model Code of Conduct by the Election Commission of India and it has been done in the past as well during elections.
