Explanation

On January 21st, a violent confrontation occurred between two community groups in the Naya Nagar area of Mumbai’s Mira Road, just before the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha. According to the police, 13 individuals were taken into custody. In response to the clashes, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation demolished illegal roadside stalls in Naya Nagar on January 23rd. Additional security forces from the SRPF and Rapid Action Force (RAF) were also deployed. Nevertheless, further clashes broke out on the evening of January 23rd.

In this case, a 1-minute 27-second video is shared online with the hashtag #MiraRoadRiots. The video shows police nabbing young men and arresting them. This post is shared with a claim stating, “Fundamental radicals were arrested after they entered the house.” You can view related posts with similar claims here, here, here, and here.

What’s the truth?

We discovered an X post by Hyderabad-based journalist Yunus Lasania dated August 24, 2022, after reverse searching the keyframes of the viral video. According to his X post, “Hyderabad police enter homes and arrest protestors in and around Shalibanda after protests continued against #RajaSingh for his derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad. Lathi charge/stone pelting reported. At least a few are out protesting.”

Additionally, we discovered that he had included a link in his X post. After careful examination, we learned that it was a Siasat.com article covering the riots in Hyderabad. Moreover, we observed that it includes a screen grab of the viral video.

According to the article, “Hyderabad city police on Wednesday night barged into several homes and dragged out Muslim youth in and around Shalibanda on as protests against suspended BJP MLA swelled over his derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad. The peaceful atmosphere that prevailed earlier in the day came to an end as over 50 people protesting against Raja Singh were taken into custody.”

The aforementioned details make it clear that the viral video has nothing to do with the recent riots that took place on Mumbai’s Mira Road. This video is from Hyderabad and is also quite old.

Conclusion:

Therefore, we conclude that the viral video, purporting to show the riots on Mira Road, is untrue and misleading. This video shows the riots that broke out in Hyderabad around 2022 after BJP MLA Raja Singh made disparaging remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
