Explanation

A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrapped up his 63-day Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Mumbai city, a rally took place at Mumbai Shivaji Park.

On March 17, a huge rally took place in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, planned by the INDIA coalition, which is led by the Congress, after Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra wrapped up. Many leaders of the India bloc were present, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey.

Meanwhile, the 15-second viral video is shared by the user, namely Megh Updates on X (formerly Twitter). We can see in the video that Rahul Gandhi is giving a speech and saying, “In Hindu dharma, there is a Shakti word, and we are fighting against Shakti, and we are fighting against one Shakti.” Megh Updates shared 15 seconds and posted a Hindu goddess picture and claimed that Rahul Gandhi declares an open war against Hinduism and says his war is against Hindu goddess Aadi Devi Maa Shakti.

A similar video was shared by Tamil Nadu state BJP President K Annamalai and claimed that people in Tamil Nadu and Rahul Gandhi were continuously insulting Hindu goddesses. BJP Annamalai shared a post in which two videos are seen playing. First, we can see Rahul Gandhi interacting with a pastor, and the pastor explaining how Jesus Christ is a real god, not such as Shakti. The pastor also explained that Jesus is human; he was born like a man in this world. The second video is similar and has already been shared by Megh Updates, where Rahul Gandhi is seen saying, ‘In Hindu dharma, there is a Shakti word, and we are fighting against Shakti, and we are fighting against one Shakti.’

This video is widely shared by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters, can be seen here, here, here, here, here, and here

What is the Truth?

We searched and found the full original video posted on the official Indian National Congress YouTube channel on March 17, 2024. From timestamp 5:05, while giving a speech, Rahul Gandhi said, “There is a word ‘Shakti’ in Hinduism. We are fighting against Shakti. The question is, what is Shakti?

The soul of the king is in the EVM. This is true. The soul of the king is in the EVM and every institution of the country, in the ED, CBI, and Income Tax departments.

A senior leader I don’t want to reveal his name. A senior leader from this state (Maharashtra) left Congress and cried in front of my mother and said, ‘Sonia ji, I am ashamed that I don’t have the strength to fight this shakti. I do not want to go to jail.’.. And he is not the only one… Thousands of people have been threatened like this. What do you think people from Shiv Sena and from the NCP left just like that? No, the ‘Sakti’ I was talking about. They strangled their throats and took them to the BJP, and everyone got scared and left.”

Rahul Gandhi many times mentioned the ‘Shakti’ word, and in his full speech, he mentioned Shakti as government institutions such as the ED, CBI, and Income Tax Department, and he also mentioned the rich businessman of India as Shakti (power). In his full speech, Gandhi nowhere mentioned or insulted the Hindu Goddess.

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Shakti’ speech is misinterpreted and falsely shared out of context. The video clip related to the claim can be seen below with the subtitles.

Even while writing this article, Rahul Gandhi tweeted from his official X handle about his Shakti statement and said, “I did not speak about religious power of any kind, but I spoke about the power of unrighteousness, corruption, and falsehood.” Rahul Gandhi also mentioned PM Modi is misinterpreting his Shakti statement.

Many credible media outlets such as India Today, The Mint, NDTV, and The Hindu also reported about the ‘Shakti’ statement issue.

In the shared post by Tamil Nadu BJP state president Annamalai, two videos are being played. The first video is from September 2022 when Rahul Gandhi had interaction with a Tamil Nadu pastor George Ponniah during Bharat Jodo Yatra, not from the recent one, Bharat Jodo Nyay.

Megh Update shared an out-of-context video, and BJP leader K. Annamalai shared an old video and a misinterpreted and out-of-context video to claim that Rahul Gandhi literally insulted the Hindu Goddess, but he did not insult Hindu Goddess whereas he actually mentioned Shakti (Power) as a state to be unrighteous, corrupt and false. His Shakti speech is misinterpreted and falsely shared.

Conclusion

Rahul Gandhi did not insult any Hindu goddess, but Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Shakti’ speech is misinterpreted and falsely shared out of context.
