What is the truth?
When searching with relevant keywords we found that the news is old. Washington Post article dated 19, December 2019 reported that India’s external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar abruptly canceled a meeting with senior members of Congress after U.S. lawmakers refused demands to exclude a congresswoman who has criticized the Indian government’s policies in Kashmir, as per the congressional aides familiar with the matter.
He was to meet the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Eliot L. Engel (D-N.Y.); the committee’s top Republican, Rep. Michael McCaul (Tex.); and others, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) in December 2019 during his visit to the US. But Indian officials informed the committee that Jaishankar would not meet the team if it included Jayapal.
Vice President Kamala Harris quote tweeted the news that reported Jaishankar denied meeting the team asking to refuse Pramila Jayapal on 20, December 2019 mentioning that she stands with Jayapal as her colleagues in the House did as it is wrong for any foreign government to tell Congress what members are allowed in meetings on Capitol Hill.
Ashutosh Dubey quoted the ‘newsriveting’ article as the source of his post. This recent article mentions that Jaishankar said, “Don’t think her report has a fair understanding of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir or fair characterisation of what the Government of India is doing. I have no interest in meeting her” upon canceling his meeting. Another viral post also claims the same.
But the same lines by Jaishankar can be seen in Hindustan Times dated August 2020. The article reported the explanation of why Jaishankar cancelled his meeting with US lawmakers. And the viral post by Rakesh Krishnan Simha quoted OpIndia article as its source. This OpIndia article dated 21, June 2023 mentions that the incident happened in December 2019. However, this information is concealed in the viral tweet.
Further, when searching to know if Jaishankar has joined Modi in his US trip now, we found no such news or details about the meeting he cancelled recently in the US.
