Explanation

Vivek Agnihotri, director of the movie ’The Kashmir Files’ tweeted recently that the movie has won the best film award at the Dada Saheb Phalke awards 2023. Multiple news media including ANI and Times Now mentioned that the movie won the best film award at the Dada Saheb Phalke awards 2023.

What is the truth?

When searching with keywords, it is found that the movie ‘The Kashmir Files’ has won the ‘Best Film’ award at ‘Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards 2023’ which is completely different from ‘Dada Saheb Phalke’ award, the highest award in the field of cinema.

The Dada Saheb Phalke award was introduced by the Government of India. The recipients are recognized for their contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.  And the award comprises a Swarna Kamal (golden lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of 10 lakh rupees.

There are multiple private organizations in the name of Dada Saheb Phalke that are not related to the National Film Award (Dada Saheb Phalke Award) by the Directorate of Film Festivals.

Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival (DPIFF) is one such private organization. The website of DPIFF mentions itself as an independent international film festival.

DPIFF’s Twitter page on 21, February 2023, tweeted congratulating the movie Kashmir Files for winning the best film award at DPIFF confirming that the award to the movie ‘The Kashmir Files’ was given by DPIFF.

In addition to it, the images tweeted by Vivek Agnihotri have a trophy carved with the name of DPIFF. The confusion arises when he tweeted with the hashtag ’DadaSahebPhalkeAwards2023’. And the same is amplified by news media outlets like ‘ANI’ and ‘Times Now’ misleading social media users.

Here are other false claims shared by Vivek Agnihotri and fact-checked by Youturn.

Vivek Agnihotri and Anupam Kher are wrong. The Kashmir Files is not shortlisted for the Oscars.

Vivek Agnihotri shares an image of students watching BBC documentary to claim they are watching his movie.

Conclusion

It is found that the claim by Vivek Agnihotri that his movie ‘The Kashmir Files’ won the best film award at Dada Saheb Phalke Awards is misleading. The award was presented by a private organization DPIFF.
