A search on the website of Kashmir Electricity Corporation Limited, to check if it distributes electricity free of cost to the people of Kashmir, revealed the approved tariffs for domestic customers. According to the Tariff Order Distribution 2007-08, the price of electricity is fixed at Rs. 1.15 per unit up to 100 units.
What did the Deputy Governor say?
On June 23, a video of the speech of the Deputy Governor of Kashmir was published on the ‘Excelsior’ News channel titled “It’s criminal to not pay electricity bills.”
In the video, he said, “Electricity is no longer available to those who are not willing to pay for it.” His speech did not directly mention Kashmiris. He clearly mentions ‘those who do not pay.’
Deputy Governor Manoj Sinha has said that electricity will have to be paid for. However, it started going viral when some web pages published that free electricity is being provided in Kashmir till now.
