Explanation

A 30-second video claiming that Muslims protested against the appointment of a Hindu as District Collector of Alappuzha, Kerala, is being circulated on social media. Also, it has been posted on the Twitter page of the Indu Makkal Katchi that the Muslims took out a procession in protest against the newly appointed Brahmin District Collector.

What is the truth?

When searching for the protest held by Muslims in Malappuram, Kerala, “Thousands take part in protests against IAS Sriram’s posting. Sunny Yuvajana Sangam and Students Federation members take out marches in Malabar,” News Indian Express reported on July 31.

Protests were held in various parts of the Malabar region on July 30 against the appointment of IAS officer Sriram Venkataraman, the main culprit in the death of journalist KM Basheer, as the District Collector of Alappuzha.

Last August 2019, Journalist Basheer died in an accident when a car driven by Sriram Venkataraman hit his bike under the influence of alcohol. Basheer, 35, has been working in the Thiruvananthapuram section of the Malayalam daily Chiraj. Sriram Venkataraman was the Director of the Land Survey and Land Records Department when the accident occurred.

The News Minute reported in 2020, ”The police filed a charge sheet six months after journalist Basheer’s death. However, the investigation into the case has not started. Also, in 2020, The News Minute reported that IAS officer Sriram Venkataraman, who was accused of causing Basheer’s death by driving under the influence of alcohol, has returned to duty.”

The government had issued an order transferring Sriram Venkataraman, who was working as the director of the Kerala Medical Services Corporation, as the District Collector of Alappuzha. Protests and marches were held in various areas demanding the order withdrawal.

Muslim organizations were not the only ones to fight against Sriram Venkataraman’s appointment. Kerala Journalists Union KUWJ and District Congress Party also organized protests.

Due to various objections to the appointment of Sriram Venkataraman, the Kerala government has cancelled his appointment. Also, a Hindu named Krishna Teja has been appointed as the new District Collector of Alappuzha.

Conclusion

The claim that Muslims protested against the appointment of a Hindu Brahmin as the new Collector of Kerala’s Alappuzha district is false.

Protests have been held on behalf of not only Muslim organizations but also other organizations and parties in various parts of the district for the appointment of IAS officer Sriram Venkataraman, who is the accused and the main culprit in the death of journalist Basheer. Now it is known that a Hindu has been appointed as the new district collector.
