Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)’s Mayor elections are slated to be held on April 26, 2023. In the past couple of weeks, the Delhi politics have been buzzing about the upcoming elections. The recent arrest and judicial custody of former Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, following allegations of corruption has also spiced up the parties eyeing for the mayor’s seat.
After Manish Sisodia’s arrest, Atishi Marlena took as Delhi’s Education Minister. She recently made a surprise visit to one of the schools and the video of the surprise visit shows that the school is in a bad state.
The video is being shared on social media with captions questioning the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and their claims of greatly improving the standard of Education since it came to power. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and several other BJP members and supporters have been making this claim. The Congress party functionaries and supporters are tweeting the video too. What’s the truth?
The video shared by Kiren Rijiju is available in the AAP’s twitter page and on its YouTube page, as well. This video was shared by Delhi’s Education Minister Atishi too.

In the beginning of the video, a school ID (1253404) is mentioned in the name board of the school. When searched for the school using its ID, we found that the school belonged to the control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), not the Delhi Government.
There is an overlap of duties of the Government of Delhi and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in certain areas, such as education. The MCD oversees primary schools, and the Delhi government oversees higher secondary schools.
As seen earlier, the school in the viral video is under the control of the MCD. The AAP took control of the MCD in December 2022, after a long delay from the original scheduled time of April 2022. Before December 2022, the BJP was in power at the MCD for 15 years.
It was only on February 2023, Shelly Oberai from AAP was elected as the Mayor of Delhi. Since Delhi follows one-year term on a rotational basis, the election for the next term is scheduled for April 26, 2023 and the AAP and Shelly Oberai is mostly likely to retain control of the Mayorship. Kiren Rijiju took a dig at AAP’s handling of schools. Meanwhile, it is interesting to note that AAP’s handling of schools had been featured in an article by The New York Times, which also became controversial.

Kiren Rijiju’s post is misleading as the school in the video shared by him is under the control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the BJP was in power at the MCD for 15 years until December 2022.
