JP Nadda, Bharatiya Janata Party National President, who is on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, said that the construction of AIIMS in Madurai is 95% complete, according to the official Twitter page of the Tamil Nadu BJP and other news channels.
While addressing a consultative meeting of BJP’s multi-disciplinary experts in Madurai, Nadda said at 10.50 minutes, “The work on Madurai AIIMS Hospital is 95% complete. In the first phase, Rs.1264 crore has been allocated for the construction of AIIMS Hospital. Additionally, Rs.164 crore has been earmarked for the Infectious Diseases Division. The hospital will have 750 beds and 250 beds with ICU facility. The student enrollment has also been increased from 100 to 250”.
After Nadda’s speech, political parties and netizens have raised criticisms as on how the construction work of Madurai AIIMS, which has not even started yet, is 95% completed.
What is the truth?
After the foundation stone of Madurai AIIMS Hospital was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, approximately 90 percent of the construction of the compound wall for Madurai AIIMS Hospital has been completed.
On August 19, 2022, Tamil Nadu Health Minister M. Subramaniam announced that the construction work of AIIMS Hospital in Madurai Thopur will begin in 6 months, according to ‘The Hindu’.
Madurai AIIMS CEO had informed that it will take 2 more years for Madurai AIIMS hospital to be ready in April 2022. Therefore, this year, the classes for the AIIMS Madurai students are temporarily being held at Ramanathapuram Medical College.
