Explanation
Several users in Twitter have complained that the Platform tickets in railway stations were increased to Rs.50 per ticket. Congress party had also posted in its official twitter handle about the rise of platform tickets.
Various journalists and party members of Congress and Samajwadi Party tweeted on the issue which can be seen here, here, here, here and here.
Some have even shared a photo of platform tickets which can be seen here, here, here and here.
What’s the truth?
A keyword search revealed tweets from various party members, journalists and even common people tweeting and posting about the increase of the platform ticket charges. Similarly, several tweets claimed that the ticket prices were at higher prices than the usual Rs.10 per ticket. The below shown tweet from Shadab Moizee claim that the platform ticket was charged at Rs.30 in New Delhi Railway Station.
However, we found that Press Information Bureau also tweeted that the claim that the news about platform ticket price rise is misleading. It tweeted, “The price of rail platform ticket is ₹ 10 only. In special circumstances, DRMs can increase its price in the short term due to the possibility of congestion and accidents.”
DRM Mysuru had tweeted on 20th October 2022 that the platform tickets will be increased to Rs.20 till 31st October 2022 to avoid congestion and crowding in the stations.
Similar measure was taken in CSMT, Dadar, Thane, Kalyan, LTT and Panvel railway stations by the Central Railway.
Similar measures were taken during the Covid pandemic too. Though these measures are said to be taken to curb congestion in stations as a temporary measure, the platform ticket is still changed at a relatively higher price than during Congress times when it was just Rs.3 as compared to Rs.10 now. However, the Congress party’s tweet and many others’ tweet is misleading that the platform ticket is priced at Rs.50 at all times rather than during special circumstances.
Conclusion
The claim that the platform ticket prices are Rs.50 is misleading. Though the platform tickets are charged at Rs.50 in some stations, it is only a temporary measure during the festive season to reduce congestion in platforms.
