Explanation

In a widely shared 28-second video on social media, Congressman Mallikarjun Kharge, the party’s national president, is seen calling out the audience for chanting “Narendra Modi” during his speech at a public gathering. Kharge can be heard shouting back in Hindi at a gathering in the video, which is roughly translated as ” Sit silently if you don’t want to listen, get out. You are saying whatever is coming to your mouth. Listen if you want to, otherwise move on your way.” The infographic text that says, “What days the Congress leaders are facing… still not ashamed,” is also visible in the widely shared video. What’s the truth?

We discovered an extended version of the same clip posted to the Indian National Congress’s YouTube channel on November 26 by performing a reverse image search of the viral video. Under the title “Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge addresses the public in Kalwakurthy, Telangana,” the 29-minute, 20-second video has been posted.

When Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the government for not fulfilling election promises at the 20:19 timestamp, a few audience members interrupted him with some unclear slogans. At 21:05, in response to public chants, he said something in Hindi that can be interpreted loosely as “Sit silently, if you don’t want to listen, get out. Don’t talk like that. Didn’t you people know that a leader of the All-India Congress Party was speaking? You are saying whatever is coming to your mouth. Listen if you want to, otherwise, go away.”

As seen in the viral video posted in this post, the crowd did not appear to be chanting “Modi, Modi” in the original video.

Under the headline “Congress Kharge loses cool,” this same video clip was also shared by numerous other news sites. You can watch it here and here.

All this confirms that the viral video was digitally altered to add the audio ‘Modi, Modi’ slogans to the original video and circulated with false narratives.
