Explanation

Since February 13, when security personnel stopped the protesting farmers’ march to the nation’s capital, they have been camped out at the Khanauri and Shambhu points on the Punjab-Haryana border. They promised to take calls regarding the march on February 29. Meanwhile, the Haryana Police has requested that the passports and visas of individuals who participated in acts of violence during the agitation be revoked.

Farmers are mobilizing to put pressure on the central government to grant their demands, which include a waiver of farm loans and a legal guarantee for a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

In this case, a tonne of pictures and videos are circulating online, connecting it to the ongoing farmer’s protest. Here, in this widely shared photo, we see former cricket player MS Dhoni in a Gurudwara, standing beside someone donning a yellow turban. This post is shared with a claim stating, “despite being invited to the Ram Mandir in Pran Prathisthan, Mahendra Singh Dhoni chose not to attend. Instead, he visited the Gurudwara today while the farmers were staging a protest.” The user went on to add that, MSD is a man of spine and holds secular values. Also, this image is claimed as recent. What’s the truth?

We started with a simple Google reverse image search, which led us to a similar image dated back to 17 July 2022. Gurpreet Singh Anand has uploaded it with a caption, “Bowled over with the legendary @mahi7781.”

According to the user’s Instagram bio, he serves as president of the Gurudwara Khalsa Jatha British Isles, which was founded in London, England, in 1908.

When we intensified our search, we came across another image where we could see both MS Dhoni and Gurpreet Singh Anand sitting on a floor with the same attire. This was shared by Gurpreet on October 2022 with a caption, “I met MS Dhoni a couple of months ago at the Gurdwara @khalsajatha in London and noticed he was calm, at one with himself, and able to absorb the spiritual moment. It’s that inner calmness that gives fortitude in situations that may stress many others out.”

All this information makes it clear that the image is not recent as the viral claim suggests. Moreover, this clarifies that the image has no association with the ongoing farmer’s protest.

Conclusion:

To sum up, the viral image with a claim stating that MS Dhoni visited a Gurudwara amidst the farmer’s protest is completely false. In reality, the image is old and from 2022 when MS Dhoni visited a Gurudwara in London.
