Explanation

In a viral video, we can see a Muslim woman garlanding a young Muslim boy, and then both of them hug each other. While sharing this video, an X user gave a caption for the viral video, “it shows an Indian Muslim family in Kerala in which the begum (wife) goes to 72 hours after giving birth to three children. Thereafter, Begum, with her elder son, who prays and reads namaz five times, will do nikkah with her boy and accept him as her husband.” In this video, it is claimed that the lady got pregnant by her son.

The same virally claimed video was widely shared by right-wing supporters and can be seen here, here, here, and here

What’s the truth?

We ran a reverse image search using the keyframes of the viral video and found a real-context video posted by the Sofi tv Facebook page in April 2024. Urdu text seen on the video is translated as a mother kissing her prince (son) after his Itikaf (Islamic ritual). In this real-life video, a Muslim mother is garlanding and hugging her son after he completes his Itikaf.

Itikaf is an Islamic religious ritual that Muslims view as a form of spiritual retreat. In the final 10 days of Ramadan, many Muslims stay at the mosque continuously to be present for Laylat al-Qadr, whenever it occurs. This practice, called Itikaf, is an Arabic term that means “to isolate oneself and to cling to or adhere to something.”

However, we are not able to find out when and where this video was shot. Once the original source video is found, it will be updated in the article. Though the whereabouts of this video is unknown, we could ascertain that the video does not show a Muslim woman marrying her son.

Conclusion

Muslim mom garlanding and hugging her son after he completes his Itikaf (Islamic religious rituals) has been falsely shared as Muslim mother is marrying her own son.
