Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently made a surprise visit to the new Parliament building to review the ongoing construction work. In this situation, it is claimed that the new Parliament has two records including that it was built in 17 months and TATA built it for the cost of one rupee to the government as it is a gift to the nation. What is the truth?
When searching with the relevant keywords we found that the claim is completely false. The Times of India story dated 31, March 2023 is found carrying a set of photographs to report about the PM’s surprise visit to the new Parliament building.
The cost of the project is mentioned as 971 crores in 2020 and is believed to have gone higher. The foundation stone for the new Parliament Building was laid in December 2020 by PM Modi. The building was earlier expected to be completed by November last year and is likely to be inaugurated soon. Hence the project was not completed in 17 months with one rupee.
The Hindu newspaper clipping dated 17, September 2020 is found on the Karnataka Legislative Assembly website mentioning that Tata Projects Limited’s bid of Rs. 861.9 crores for the construction and 5-year maintenance contract of the new Parliament building was the lowest of the two bids opened.
A press release by the Prime Minister’s office on PIB website mentions that Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament building on 10, December 2020.
NDTV article dated 20, January 2022 mentions that the new Parliament building cost shoots up by 29% to Rs. 1250 crore from the budgeted cost of Rs. 977 crores. It further mentions that it will cost another 282 crores.
Conclusion
It is found that the claim that the new Parliament is built in 17 months time period by Tata for the cost of one rupee to the government as it is a gift by TATA to the nation is completely false.
It is to be noted that the foundation stone of the new Parliament building was laid in December 2020 and the building is likely to be inaugurated soon as of this writing. The cost of the project is Rs. 861.9 crores as per the bid documents and has touched Rs. 1250 crore in January 2022 with an additional expected estimation of Rs. 282 crores.
