Nirmala Sitharaman did not buy onions. Viral image is fake.
When asked in Parliament why onion was so expensive, the same Nirmala said that I do not eat onions, who eats, he will know what he is buying today, the whole BJP is a false party, it has nothing to do with the public.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Chennai on a 1-day trip on 8th October 2022 according to a tweet on her office’s twitter page. During her visit, she visited Mylapore market and interacted with the vendors and residents of the locality.
She also purchased some vegetables. An image of Nirmala Sitharaman buying onions is being shared virally on social media which can be seen here, here, here and here. This is shared because; she had said in the past that she doesn’t eat onions during a debate on price rise in the Parliament.
What’s the truth?
The virally shared image looks digitally manipulated quite easily even to the untrained eye. As we set out to prove it, we discovered Nirmala Sitharaman Office’s twitter handle had uploaded various pictures of her visit to the Mylapore Maket. In addition to photos, a video also has been shared in the twitter account which shows that the Finance Minister had not purchased onions. According to a report from the Hindu, she had purchased a Pidi Karanai (Wild Yam), Sundakkai (turkey berry) and mulai keerai (a kind of amaranth) and manathakkali keerai (black night shade).
Here’s the video from her office’s twitter profile.
